Why Backlinking Your Website And Business Helps To Guarantee Your Business’ Future And Success

There is a “secret” strategy that almost all internet marketers know about but few business people (or even their website developers) know about. It is called “backlinking”

What is Backlinking?

Backlinking is the process of getting other high profile website (and may be other not-so-high profile websites) to link back to your website (and/or website pages.)

How this works is very quite simple: You simply have other websites either promote your website on their website, or you can set up a profile page which links back to your website, or you can make comments on blog and forums for backlinks.

There is another strategy for this and it is called “link exchanges.”

I don’t like link exchanges for the simple reason that I then have links to other websites that leave my website. Any reason or excuse for a person to leave a website and they’ll go. Of course, relevant links that pertain to my field are acceptable; especially if I receive some sort of gain from the link in the form of monies or other effects.

The reason to get backlinks

The reason why you need backlinks to your website is to established authority with the search engines. By establishing that your website is popular and thus has authority your website (and thus your business) will rank higher in the search engines, thereby bringing you more and more free traffic which translates into more customers and more profit.

This is one of the biggest reasons that social media marketing is so very popular with online businesses. By getting your name (or your business’ website url) out there and spreading virally is such a boon to your business’ bottom line. The more people see and spread your name to other websites gets you more backlinks.

How your backlinks are measured.

Google has a application call PageRank. This tool measures your website’s (or webpage’s) rank. It is scored from 0 to 10. 0 being the lowest and 10 the highest. The higher your PageRank the better.

If you were to download the Google Toolbar you would be able to see the page rank for any website or webpage on the internet.

You would want high PageRank websites to link back to you. For instance, Google has a very high PageRank so getting a backlink from Google to your website would be very desirable.

Getting backlinks from low ranking websites is not very desirable but they too play an important role for build up PageRank. Getting a few hundred backlinks from low ranking websites is just as beneficial as getting 10 backlinks from high PageRank websites. So don’t discount the low ranking websites.

You can’t always control who backlinks to you

While you can have a backlinking strategy…and you should, you can’t always control who is backlinking to you.

you might write an article for your blog or trade magazine which is highly popular. People will sometimes take that article and backlink to your website as a result. Of course that site which is backlinking to you may be something you or others may find objectionable like maybe an adult orientated website that has pornography or some such.

If you find that this is the case then you can ask the webmaster to remove it, or you can just let it be. It is up to you. The point is that you can’t always control your backlinks.

Backlinking is important for establishing authority and thus ultimately higher rankings in the search engines which brings in more visitors and customers, so you should have a backlinking strategy.

The downside of this backlinking is the time investment. It takes a lot of time to do this strategy and to do it properly. While very profitable it can be impracticable.
