Jesse Thomas did just that in his video State of the Internet.

The video — created and animated by Thomas with data from multiple sources — highlights some remarkable figures and visually depicts the Internet as we know it today. It’s a must-watch video for anyone trying to wrap their minds around just how immersed web technologies have become in our everyday lives.

- There are 1.73 billion Internet users worldwide as of September 2009.

- Facebook gets 260 billion pageviews per month, which equals 6 million page views per minute and 37.4 trillion pageviews in a year.

Content Is King For Business Websites

What a lot of businesses don’t know or won’t do is add content to their websites. This is a BIG killer of sales and leads, especially for service businesses.

At my site for U-Save Moving I have over 200 different articles on the moving business. I could be adding more and more everyday, but I have more than enough to generate between 50 and 100 unique pageviews every single day.

I have found that if I get more than that, then I get overwhelmed with business…horrible problem I know, but it is a problem. However, many of my competitors don’t even have a website, and the ones that do have little to no content on them. Big mistake.

As I consult with other businesses about using the internet to expand their businesses I find that many don’t even have the remotest clue. And unfortunately, a majority even refuse to add content to their sites. Such a shame.

In my town here we have an adorable theater that shows movies and such. Not a great theater but a nice one. For 2 bux you can see any movie showing at the time. Who can’t afford that. They have a website and it is good, except there is NO content. They have no movie trailers on their website. A simple YouTube code could be embedded on their site for nothing and they can have movie trailers of upcoming movies for nothing. How about movie reviews? Nope nothing. How about incentives for coming into the theater? Again, zilch. They have a great opportunity yet they do not utilize it. And with such great movie prices there is no reason they couldn’t have that theater filled to the gills every single night. All they need is content.

The content on my website sells my service for me 85% of the time. If I can just get people to my website there is little I have to do to “sell” my potential customer.

You see my website stands out. With over 200 articles and advices, and moving company reviews…and especially the testimonials, I look like an expert. A leader in my field. My website with all its content makes the others look like blathering idiot amateurs.

When I write an article I write from what I experience as a mover. I know the concerns and considerations of my potential customer and I write an article to allay their fears. I give good solid advice and I try to point my customers to the right choice: Hopefully my services. And trust me they appreciate it.

Now if you are not a great or even a good writer don’t fret. You can get great content from others. Go to the article directories and copy a paste articles from there, just ensure you give the author the proper credit. Or for about $5.00 you can have a writer write up an article for you based on the specific keywords popular for your business.

While I have a lot of content you don’t necessarily need that much. My business started doing well when I had about 20-50 different articles.

So the point here is: if you have a website for your business, especially a service business, then you need to have content on your website. It will give you authority and creditability over your competitors; then couple that will awesome customer service and your business will boom.

A few weeks back I wrote about how I was going to test out a project. Well that experiment failed.

What was the experiment? Well…I was testing geo-targeted self-hosted websites for U-Save Moving.

I bought a really affordable Wordpress template that was supposed to be SEO friendly. I liked the template and still would like to use it, but for this next experiment I can’t use it.

These websites were geo-targeted for two of the major Mid-Michigan cities where I get a lot of traffic from. They were five pages and had my Twitter feeds on them as well as my RSS feed from my primary U-Save Moving website.

While these websites do trickle in traffic (1 or 2 hits per day) they just are not bringing the goods as I would have liked.

I did everything that I Supposed to do for SEO with them. I booked marked them on social bookmarking sites. I created Twitter accounts for each of them. I did backlinking for each of them, but I just was not getting SERP love for them, thus little to no traffic.

I still think this is a viable road to test so I have altered the test a little bit.

So instead of self-hosted Wordpress websites, I going to make 5 page Wordpress sites that hosted by Wordpress.

Wordpress gets a lot of SERP love and they tend to rank very high in the search engines for their targeted keywords. So I am going to target each major Mid-Michigan city with a Wordpress hosted geo-targeted 5 page website and see how they fare.

How Can Companies Without Website Still Attain An Effective Net Presence?

A website represents your company’s front window and dynamic repository of your latest products, services, company information, marketing messages and product content. Your company’s mission, product and/or service information are all expected to be clearly stated and illustrated on your website.

In under a decade, website-based marketing has evolved from a “cool” and progressive marketing oddity to a necessary business tool that, today, is expected of any business. To be successful, a company simply must have a website as a primary tool to communicate its message, latest product information and mission to its prospects and customers.

Beyond the front window aspect of websites, companies now leverage the web to disseminate internal information to employees (on their intranet) and even partners (on their extranet). A company without website will probably fail. Period.

Websites are very unique in their unparalleled efficiency: a website address is all one needs to invite a potential prospect to access the company’s information from anywhere, anytime. The new paradigm is already getting old. In a few short years (or even months?), companies without website will simply be overlooked.

But in lieu of a website, what can you do to get your business an effective net presence?

While not ideal, there are ways to get profile pages that will allow you to accurately describe your company’s business to the internet world. And many of these avenues are effective in giving you backlinks which creates authority and popularity (at least in the eyes of the search engines.)

Some of the more popular and well known profile sites are (in no particular order): Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Google Profile, Yahoo profile, MerchantCircle, Yelp, Backpage, Kijiji, Manta and Best of the Web. Some are free, and some require you to pay a small sum. (I forgot to mention Squidoo.)

I suggest that you create a profile for your business with each of them.

You can use the Myspace or Facebook profile pages as sort of a mini-website.

There are also three other places you could place a profile of your business that could give you an effective net presence and that is local map directories. Google Maps being the most popular, but there is also Yahoo Local and MSN Local. While I am not sure about this, I do believe that MapQuest also allows for a Map for your business.

Lastly, Don’t forget about free listings in the Yellowpages, Yellowbook and Superpages. These are vital for the over 40 crowd that still rely on that archaic method.

How To Use Misspelled Words In Inernet Marketing And Still Make A Lot Of Money

One of the key factors of any successful “inernet” marketing strategy is key word research. This is imperative in finding words and phrases that your customers are using to find you on the search engines like Google and Yahoo!. But lets face, not everyone is a great speller or pays attention to their typing. The number of search engine searches that contain misspellings are enormous.

I love it when someone writes to me after reading one of my many articles just to correct me on my spelling. First off, if you are so concerned that someone has a mispelled a word more than you are about the content, then you need a life, and secondly, by having a few misspellings in the content of my work is great because if I have misspelled a word then that means others will as well, and when they search for that word or phrase in the search engines, it means they will find me over my competitors.

When you look at the title for this article you find that I misspelled the word “internet” and while that was on purpose ; I wanted to illustrate  to you that this will actually help me be found by Google or Yahoo!. The misspelling of “inernet marketing” was actually found through my statistics from people having misspelled it in the first place. And after a little research I found that that phrase “inernet marketing” was used quite a bit by folks like you and I.

So will happen is that folks will type in “inernet marketing” into their search browsers without noticing that they have misspelled the word and because no one has optimized their websites for this misspelling I will get all that traffic.

For those of you that no life and fixate on the minutia this will turn you off and you may or may not leave, but for the greater majority, I will have provided great content for you for which to read and comprehend.

So don’t be afraid to misspell words in your websites content, it may actually help you make more money by catering to those that can’t spell good or those that don’t worry about the little things of a mispelled word.

Also, if you are doing key word research for your web site then you may actually want to find out what the common misspelled words are and optimize your website for those spellings as to capture that traffic.
